Red baldies and sunsets…two of my favorite things.
Last night, as the sun began to sink low on the horizon, my husband and I found ourselves doing one of our favorite things: riding around checking cows together. Just the two of us riding around on the side-by-side is our idea of a fancy date night. It doesn’t take much to entertain us.
Maybe it entertains us so much because it helps us slow down, breathe, and truly reconnect. Out there, it’s just the two of us. No distractions, no deadlines-just time to enjoy each other’s company without all the usual demands pulling us away.
But then the sky chooses to do something this spectacular:
It stopped me in my tracks. The light hit just right, and there she was-#33, my favorite red baldy-standing there posing for me in all of her beautiful, back-lit glory. I had to snap a picture. That moment was too beautiful to let it slip by unremembered.
This particular sunset reminded me of something important: beauty finds us in the most ordinary places. I’ve noticed lately that I’m not just taking quirky cow pictures, I’m taking pictures when my heart is overjoyed and so thankful for life’s many blessings.
Even the 1930s motor grader was too beautifully sun-washed not to be captured.
Right now it seems like I am in the thick of a crazy season. Everything is busy. The to-do list grows faster than I can cross things off, and most days it feels like there’s barely time to slow down-let alone take a deep breath. There’s so much I want to do…and yet, so much gets left undone.
Farming isn’t always easy. Some days are dry, dusty, and frustrating. Things break. Plans fall apart. But nights like this one? They remind me why we do what we do. Why it’s worth it. Why we keep showing up.
Thank You, Lord, for sunsets that stop us in our tracks. For golden hours that remind us we aren’t alone in the work. Thank You for the beauty of Your creation, and the way it speaks straight to our hearts when we need it the most.
